Longue Pierre & Grande Amfroque –
16 June 2006
This
was a late trip out
with Tara and Island Ribs. Jamie, Michelle, Chris Mourant, Catherine
and PKV.
After refuelling we left the harbour –opened the throttles
– swept back the
hair, raised broad grins across our faces and sped across the flat sea
towards
The Humps. Time was running short, so we could only do a couple of the
islets.
First
landing on Longue Pierre. Very interesting in that most of the Shag
were rather
large. Quite good numbers, although areas of the islet were pretty much
deserted. Catherine and I ringed 24 Shag chicks. Jamie and Chris added
19 more
Shag (including one adult). Total = 43 Shags.
Guillemots
clearly had a very good season with 50+ adults and plenty of young.
Only caught
a couple of adults from the usual boulder on the top. Finally getting
the hang
of the H rings now.
After
30 minutes we moved quickly on to Grande Amfroque. One Grey Seal
bobbing off
the islet taking a good look at us. Easy landing. Race around to ring 2
Great
Black-backed Gull chicks and 9 Shag chicks (Jamie & Chris added 8
Shags).
Total = 17 Shags.
Came
home around the back of Herm – opening the throttles for the run
across the
Little Russell. It
was very good of Tara, and Island Ribs, to
take us out after a very full day at work. Exciting and fast
way to get the ringing job done!
